Website accessibility

Maximising access to your website for all visitors

Websites are a unique communications medium, in that, unlike print (which can exclude people who are blind) or audio (which can exclude people who are deaf), it can be accessed by most people – even when those people have profound disabilities.

Providing this access isn’t optional – it’s a legal requirement. Nor is it terribly difficult – a standards-compliant website will be a long way on the route to being accessible. Sadly, the majority of websites remain inaccessible – usually because of a lack of awareness, either on the part of the site’s owners or the Web developer.

There are other benefits to providing an accessible website: accessible websites can perform significantly better in the search engine results pages (well, what is Google, if not a non-sighted website visitor?) for example.

We can help organisations to make their websites meet current accessibility guidelines and legislation (including the World Wide Web Consortium’s Accessibility Guidelines and The Royal National Institute of Blind People’s See It Right guidelines). We can review the current website and determine where the site is failing – and provide written recommendations for remedial action. This can either then be implemented by the current Web team, or, if required, by us.

We can also coach Web teams on accessibility requirements, helping them to understand the issues – and the benefits of implementing solutions.

Organisations engaging with us to develop a new website benefit from our accessibility policy: we ensure that all current websites are accessible as a matter of course – it’s not an expensive extra.
